A solid and informative handbook built for those new to the topics of cyberbullying or how to combat it.

The author of the Cyber Bully Self-Defense Handbook had very noble intentions for writing his guide. Michael Dyson has been there, experienced firsthand just deep and dark online aggression can get. His hopes are that no one else has to experience that at all, but if they do, that they’ll be prepared.

Each chapter, though a bit bite-sized, explores a different topic under the umbrella of cyberbullying. From what it is and the various forms it takes to the type of people who engage in such activities and why they do it. Most importantly, the latter parts focus on what to do when you find yourself in the situation of being a target of a cyber bully. I was impressed to see such a comprehensive approach taken by the author.

While the information provided in the Cyber Bully Self-Defense Handbook was undeniably valuable, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed by what wasn’t present. Many topics were broached, but not elaborated on as much as I would have expected. Especially when it comes to the meat of what I assumed the book would be about: protecting yourself from cyber bullies. It felt like being handled a box of tools but with the assumption I would already know what each of those tools did or how to use them. Examples or use cases given alongside the plethora of lists of definitions could elevate this handbook.

The lists themselves reminded me more of reading a synopsis of a book than an actual book, and the parts that the author used a more typical narrative style were the highlights of the read for me. Redundancy was also a major issue in certain parts, where some points reappeared verbatim in different sections. I would have also liked to see more about the author’s own fight with cyber bullies instead of the small snippets we did get.

Although I personally would have liked to see a little more from the Cyber Bully Self-Defense Handbook, I consider it a book well worth reading. Especially for anyone brand new to the topic.
